How to remove carpet shampoo residue?

I cleaned my carpet recently and used the required amount of shampoo in my carpet cleaner, but it left residue on the carpet. Now the carpet feels dirty/sticky-ish. Is there any way to get the residue out of the carpet so that it feels soft again? I’ve already tried to go over the area with water instead of a shampoo/water mixture….it didn’t work.

You can try going over it with water and household ammonia in the machine. Do it with the windows open and be careful. Make sure to get "non-sudsy" ammonia. Another idea would be with white vinegar. You could try both in different areas.
