You have to thoroughly vacuum the carpet before you steam clean it.

If you think one of those $99.00 squirt and suck machines will clean your ”I haven’t vacuumed my rug in 4 months” carpet you are mistaken. My company has 2 $45,000 truck mount steam cleaners and I;m not sure we could save them. You need to get a steam cleaner that’s IICRC certified ( that proves they know what they are doing) and have them come in and give it a shot. Remember its a cleaning wand not a magic wand.

Don’t waste your money.
Buy or borrow a GOOD vacuum cleaner.
Rent a Rud Doctor carpet cleaner.
Follow the directions.
move the machine SLOWLY to scrub and then SLOWLY to extract the dirty water from the carpet.

I would definitely vacuum your carpet first before you start cleaning it. You might have to go pick up a special animal vacuum cleaner. Once you picked up all the debris (cat hair, dirt, crumbs, etc.) I would then treat the carpet. I like Bissell’s carpet shampooer. What I do is I vacuum my carpet, use the shampooer, then vacuum it again. My carpet is in pretty good condition. At the least, I would vacuum your carpet once a week.
Good luck!
